The Tether Remote Operating Device (TROD) is a robot designed to operate from an overhead conveyor system to perform clean up in a basement area of Niagara Mohawk's Nine Mile Point facility. The basement was used for storage of radioactive resin waste drums suspended on hangers from an overhead monorail system. During a flood event, many of the drums were capsized, spilling their contents on the floor. TROD operated from the existing monorail and was used to clear the drums and hangers and clean the area with a high pressure water blast. The system is equipped with a manipulator and on board hydraulic power supply, as well as an extending leg to provide additional stability during high payload operations. The system is tethered and controlled from a remote console by a single operator. TROD was very successful in performing remediation activities and saved plant workers from significant radiation dose.
