he robotic equipment that
discovered faults recently in the Coxwell Avenue Trunk Sewer pipe is a
piece of ingenious engineering, say its users. Called a Responder robotic platform, it is about
the size of a small wheelbarrow, weighs a good 1,000 pounds and has
capabilities beyond any other equipment of its type, explains Earl
Brousseau, senior project manager of D.M. Robichaud Associates Limited,
the Oshawa-based firm retained by Toronto Water to do maintenance
inspections inside the 1.6-kilometre section of the sewer line.

Cracks in the concrete liner of a 60-metre section of sewer line in east Toronto has Toronto Water staff working overtime to find a fix to prevent the line from collapsing, which would cause sewage to spill into several emergency line outlets into the Don River and a tributary, the Taylor-Massey Creek. . . .

Trenchless Technology
January 1, 2009
Due to its high costs and disruptive nature, emergency pipe rehabilitation is a measure of last resort. In 1992, a 40-ft section of Almeda Road in Houston failed due to poor soils and leaking construction joints, requiring emergency pipe rehabilitation. Shortly thereafter, engineers at the City of Houston Department of Public Works and Engineering prepared a contract to inspect 13 miles of large diameter wastewater infrastructure [with the RedZone Responder].
Initial results from the inspection show corrosion in several pipe sections. Fortunately, no emergency rehab is necessary, but preventative maintenance plans are being developed. “We have better knowledge of what’s going on beneath our streets,” said Kaleyatodi. “This reduces the safety risk to our citizens and allows us to make better cleaning and rehab decisions.” Innovative, proactive technology is now being deployed to increase the overall efficiency and benefit of this public good.

Storm Water Solutions
February 15, 2008
Spring weather is on its way. After a long winter, that usually means time for spring cleaning on all fronts, including the sewer system. It is the time that formal bids and request for proposals are prepared in anticipation of upcoming system inspection and cleaning work. The key slogan here should be “inspect before you clean” and not “clean before you inspect.” . . .
